Frequently asked questions

Doula questions, honestly answered

Here are the questions I get asked most — about what a doula actually does, how my packages work, and what to expect from working together.

The basics
What does a doula actually do?

A doula offers continuous emotional, physical and informational support before, during and after birth. That means antenatal visits to help you understand your options, being with you through labour to offer comfort and reassurance, and postnatal support while you recover and adjust.

I don't perform clinical tasks — that's the job of your midwife or obstetric team. My role is to make sure you feel informed, supported and heard throughout.

What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?

A midwife is a medical professional who monitors your and your baby's health, and is responsible for the clinical side of your care. A doula doesn't provide medical care — I work alongside your midwife to offer continuous, non-clinical support and help you feel confident in the decisions being made.

Think of it as having someone in your corner throughout, in addition to your medical team, not instead of them.

Can I still have a doula if I'm giving birth in hospital?

Yes — most of my clients give birth in hospital. A doula is welcome alongside your midwife and any other birth partners; I work within hospital settings regularly and know how to support you there.

Is a doula only for people wanting an unmedicated or "natural" birth?

Not at all. I support all kinds of births — with pain relief, without it, planned caesareans, inductions, and anything in between. My role is to support the birth you want, not to push a particular approach. Informed choice is at the centre of everything — that means whatever you decide is right for you.

Will a doula replace my partner's role during labour?

No — I'm there to support both of you. Many partners find it easier to be present and involved when they're not solely responsible for holding all the practical and emotional support, because I'm there too. You decide what role feels right for your partner, and I fit around that.

My services & packages
What's the difference between Ember and Roots?

Ember is my virtual package, supporting you remotely wherever you are in the UK — antenatal calls, on-call phone/video support through labour, and postnatal check-ins.

Roots is my in-person package for families in and around Leicester, with the same structure but delivered face-to-face, including being physically present at your birth.

When should I book a doula?

Most clients book between 20–30 weeks, but there's no strict cut-off. If you're not sure whether it's the right time, message me and we can talk it through.

What if labour starts outside of normal hours?

I'm on call from 8 days before your estimated due date, day or night, until you've given birth — once you're within that window, I'm reachable and ready whenever labour begins.

Do you offer payment plans?

Booking requires a 50% non-refundable booking fee upfront, with the remaining 50% due at 36 weeks, unless we've agreed an alternative plan together. Payment plans are available if that works better for you — just ask when we speak.

What's included in a Power Hour?

One focused hour together — in person or virtual — to talk through anything on your mind. It's a good fit if you have specific questions, want to process a birth experience, or just want space to talk something through without committing to a full package.

Do you support caesareans and inductions too?

Yes. Whatever direction your birth takes — planned or unplanned — my job is to support you through it, help you understand what's happening, and make sure your voice stays part of the conversation.

Faith & culture
Do I need to be Muslim to work with you?

Not at all — I support families of all backgrounds. My own faith shapes how I practice, and I bring particular understanding to the needs of Muslim clients, but everyone is welcome to work with me.

How do you support modesty and religious practices during birth?

This is something we talk through in advance so I understand what matters to you — whether that's around who's present in the room, covering, prayer during labour, or anything else. Part of my role is helping make sure the birth space and care team respect those preferences.

Can you support home births, hospital births, and birth centres?

Yes — I support births in any setting. Where you give birth is your decision; my job is to support you well wherever that is.

Practical details
What areas do you cover?

In-person (Roots) support is currently only available in Leicester. Virtual (Ember) support is available anywhere in the UK, so if you're outside Leicester, that's usually the best option. If virtual support isn't the right fit for you, I'm happy to point you toward other doulas who cover your area.

How do I get started?

Book a free intro call — it's a no-pressure chance for us to meet, for you to ask anything, and for me to understand what kind of support would suit you best.

Still have a question?

If you can't find what you're looking for here, I'm happy to talk it through directly.
